Nutritional Management of Growing Horses

چکیده

Horses are raised to become sound athletes, and therefore optimal growth is preferred to maximal growth, which may be required in other livestock production systems. in horses, optimal growth rate results in a desirable body size at a specific age with the least amount of developmental problems. While the genetic makeup, or genotype, ultimately determines a horse’s mature size, nutrition plays an important role in achieving mature size and optimum growth rates. other factors including the environment and how the growing horse is managed will influence growth. Managing equine growth is a balance between producing a desirable individual for a particular purpose without creating skeletal problems that will reduce a horse’s athletic ability. Growing a foal too slowly results in the risk of it being too small at a particular age or never obtaining optimal mature body size. Growing a foal too quickly results in the risk of developmental orthopedic disease (DoD) such as epiphysitis, angular limb deformities, and osteochondritis dissecans (oCD) (pagan, 2005a). it has been widely recommended to maintain a steady growth rate in young horses by regularly weighing and measuring horses during at least the first 18 months of life (pagan, 2005a; NrC, 2007) and adjusting nutrition as necessary.

ASC-205: Selecting Feeds for Horses

Introduction Feeds should be selected with the nutrient requirements of the horse in mind, recognizing that requirements vary with the life stage of the horse (growing, pregnant, lactating, working, idle). Feeds for horses should always be clean and free from toxins. Feeds should also promote gastrointestinal health. The large intestine (cecum and colon) of the digestive tract contains a divers...

Meal size and feeding frequency influence serum leptin concentration in yearling horses.

Energy is an essential nutrient for all horses, and it is especially important in performance horses, pregnant and lactating mares, and young growing horses. A negative energy balance in horses such as these may result in unsatisfactory performance, decreased fertility, or slow growth. Therefore, ensuring adequate energy intake is an important aspect of the nutritional management of the equine....

Hepatic diseases in horses.

The concept 'liver disease' includes several pathological conditions affecting liver's functions. It can either consist of a temporary impaired functioning of the liver and/or it can progress to its failure. The purpose of this review is to update the knowledge on hepatobiliary diseases and in particular on equine hyperlipaemia. Hepatobiliary disease's aetiology, clinical signs, diagnosis and n...

Importance of nutritional and anti-parasite strategies in the foraging decisions of horses: an experimental test

The primary goal of foraging herbivores is to maximise the net rate of intake of digestible energy (or of a limiting nutrient). However, foraging strategies of herbivores are also sensitive to other selective forces (e.g. predation, parasites), which may modify their choice of feeding patches. Horses feed in spatially complex swards, and allocate their time among patches which vary both in term...
